El Garrafón del Castillo (Private Beach Below Castillo Real Ruins)

Castillo Real is a pre-Columbian Mayan archaeological site on Cozumel's northeast coast, reachable only by boat or by a long bicycle or scooter ride north along the coast road. Below the ruins, a rocky cove provides protected swimming in water of exceptional clarity directly over the reef. Almost no organised tour visits this site, and arriving by private boat or bicycle means having both the ruins and the reef entirely to oneself — a combination of archaeology and marine biology in complete solitude that is available nowhere else on the island.

Chen Río's natural rock pool — the east coast's finest protected swimming area — is most extraordinary at dawn, when the park restaurant is not yet open, the Atlantic light is still low and horizontal, and the pool is completely empty. The coral rock that forms the natural barrier creates a perfect swimming basin with Caribbean-warm water and visibility to the sandy bottom, and in the early morning the only sounds are the Atlantic swell on the outer reef and the seabirds above the coconut palms. Arriving by bicycle from San Miguel takes 45 minutes; the reward is one of the Caribbean's most beautiful natural swimming spots entirely to oneself.
