The beach — a crescent of white and pink pebbles between towering limestone walls, with water that ranges from emerald in the shallows to deep cobalt further out — is protected within the marine reserve and subject to visitor caps. The snorkelling in the reserve's water is among the finest in the Mediterranean, with exceptional visibility, a diverse reef ecosystem, and the possibility of encountering loggerhead sea turtles in the deeper sections.

Cala Sisine

Between Cala Luna and Cala Mariolu along the Gulf of Orosei coast, Cala Sisine is accessible by boat or via a four-hour hike from Baunei through the Supramonte plateau. The beach is a wide semicircle of white pebbles backed by a dense Mediterranean maquis that comes right down to the shore and frames the view with wild lavender, rosemary, and juniper. A fresh-water spring in the undergrowth behind the beach makes extended stays possible for those who have hiked in, and the natural freshwater shower after a long swim in the sea is one of those small sensory pleasures that lingers in the memory long after the holiday ends.

Porto Zafferano

On Sardinia's western coast south of Oristano, Porto Zafferano is a small, wild beach accessible via an unmarked dirt track that branches from the main coastal road and navigates a kilometre of rough terrain before arriving at a bay that sees almost no visitors despite its quality. The beach is sandy with excellent swimming, the water is clear and uncrowded, and the complete absence of facilities — no bar, no sunbeds, no marked parking — creates an environment of absolute naturalness. The few visitors who find Porto Zafferano by following local knowledge tend to keep the information to themselves, which is exactly as it should be.
