Praia do Barranco das Belharucas

In the eastern Algarve between Armação de Pêra and Albufeira, the Barranco das Belharucas beach requires a fifteen-minute walk along a clifftop trail from the nearest car parking point, which effectively filters out the majority of casual beach visitors. The beach is a pristine pocket of golden sand beneath dramatic ochre cliffs, with water quality that benefits from the rocky bottom and the absence of any nearby development. The trail to reach it passes through fragrant Algarve scrubland of rosemary, lavender, and wild fig, and the views back toward the Marinha headland on the approach are exceptional. A packed lunch and a snorkel mask are all the equipment needed for a perfect day here.

Praia de Odeceixe

At the northern boundary of the Algarve where the region meets the Alentejo, Odeceixe is one of the coast's most unusual and beautiful beaches — a wide expanse of Atlantic sand where the Seixe river meets the sea, creating a warm, shallow lagoon on the inland side that contrasts with the powerful ocean waves on the open beach. The village of Odeceixe above the valley is one of the most charming on the western coast, and the beach itself, surrounded by protected countryside, retains a wild and uncommericalised character. Weekday visits outside July and August offer near-solitude on a beach of exceptional natural quality.

Praia de Amado

On the Costa Vicentina between Carrapateira and Aljezur, Praia de Amado is a world-class Atlantic surf beach that on weekdays in the shoulder season is occupied almost exclusively by surfers working the powerful swells that roll in from the open Atlantic. Non-surfers who don't mind strong waves will find a beach of dramatic beauty — wide, backed by sand dunes, with the Serra de Monchique mountains visible inland on clear days. The surf school operating from the beach provides a focal point for activity, and the café at the clifftop car park serves excellent coffee and petiscos. This is the Algarve with its wild Atlantic character fully intact.
