Maamigili North Beach

Maamigili is the domestic airport island of South Ari Atoll, primarily functional as a transit point for resort guests completing the forty-minute flight from Velana in Malé. The north beach, on the far side of the island from the runway, is used mainly by the island's small permanent staff population and is essentially unknown to visitors passing through. The beach is clean, the lagoon is shallow and warm, and the coral reef immediately offshore is undisturbed. Arriving on an early morning flight and spending an hour on the north beach before the transfer boat departs for a resort island costs nothing and provides a quietly extraordinary experience: a pristine lagoon on an inhabited Maldivian island, with no other visitor in sight.

The whale sharks of the South Ari Marine Protected Area feed most actively in the early morning, before the sun has reached an angle that warms the surface water and pushes the plankton deeper. At dawn, the water is flat and cold, the light is extraordinary, and the sharks are feeding at the surface in complete calm.
