At the southern boundary of Koh Lanta National Park, Bamboo Bay is accessible by a jungle track from the park entrance or, more easily, by longtail boat from the southern beaches. The small crescent of sand backed by dense jungle has no commercial development, just a park ranger station and occasional food vendor. The water is exceptionally clear and the snorkelling on the rocks at either end of the bay is excellent. In the low season and on weekday mornings, it is entirely possible to have the bay completely to yourself for hours. The surrounding forest is home to hornbills, monitor lizards, and dusky leaf monkeys, adding a wildlife dimension to the beach experience that distinguishes Bamboo Bay from any resort beach.

Ko Rok Noi

An island day trip from Koh Lanta, Ko Rok Noi and its sister island Ko Rok Yai sit within the national park boundaries about twenty-five kilometres south of the main island. The beaches are among the finest in the entire Thai Andaman, with powdery white sand and water of extraordinary clarity in aquamarine shades. A day trip by speedboat from Saladan includes snorkelling time on some of the best reefs in the region, with hard and soft coral in excellent condition and abundant reef fish. Because the islands are protected national park territory and require a permit, visitor numbers are controlled. An early morning departure catches the islands before the day-trip fleet arrives and the light is at its most spectacular on the water.

Ao Mai Pai

At the absolute southern tip of Koh Lanta, beyond the national park checkpoint and accessible only with a park entry fee and ranger escort, Ao Mai Pai is the most remote beach on the island accessible on foot. The small bay has perfect sand, completely clear water, and a surrounding jungle that gives it an atmosphere of genuine wilderness. Park rangers limit the number of daily visitors, which ensures that the experience is always quiet regardless of the season. Bring everything you need as the rangers do not permit any commercial activity within this zone of the park. The thirty-minute walk through dense jungle to reach the bay is itself an experience worth making the trip for.
