Despite its accessibility by road, it receives a fraction of the visitors of the famous beaches, partly because its grey sand and cliff-backed setting doesn't conform to the turquoise-and-white Santorini aesthetic. The swimming is good, the water clean, and the late afternoon light on the pumice cliffs transforms the already surreal landscape into something genuinely ethereal. The small marina at the northern end has a good fish taverna.
Mesa Pigadia Beach
Mesa Pigadia, on the south-eastern coast between Vlychada and the Red Beach approach, is a modest strip of black volcanic sand accessible via a coastal trail from Vlychada that few visitors make the effort to walk. The beach faces directly south towards the open Aegean and has no facilities whatsoever — no sunbeds, no taverna, no shade — which effectively limits its visitors to serious beach-seekers who bring everything they need. The swimming is excellent in calm weather, the snorkelling over the volcanic reef at the eastern end is among the best accessible snorkelling on the island, and the complete absence of commercial infrastructure gives it a quality of natural solitude that is increasingly rare on Santorini.
Exo Gialos Beach
Exo Gialos, in the southern tip of the island between the main Perissa-Vlychada road and the sea, is one of those beaches that appears on maps but receives almost no mention in guidebooks or travel articles — a moderately wide stretch of dark sand in a bay facing south, accessible via an unmarked track, with water that is consistently clear and a geography that makes it naturally sheltered from the prevailing winds. The beach is used occasionally by local fishermen and by a handful of visitors from the nearby campsites who discover it by wandering, but it is essentially undiscovered by the mainstream tourist circuit. On weekday mornings in shoulder season, solitude is essentially guaranteed.
