Best Beaches in Byron Bay | Australia Beach Guide
Byron Bay: Australia's Most Beloved Coastal Town
Byron Bay is a small coastal town in northern New South Wales, 180 kilometres south of Brisbane, perched on the most easterly point of the Australian continent — Cape Byron, where the lighthouse marks the first sunrise in Australia each morning. Byron Bay has been a countercultural magnet since the 1970s, attracting surfers, musicians, yogis, and wellness seekers drawn to its exceptional beaches, laid-back creative scene, and the combination of subtropical bush hinterland and open Pacific Ocean. The town has evolved into one of Australia's most fashionable destinations without entirely losing its Bohemian soul — the farmers' markets, live music venues, surf schools, and rainforest retreats behind the beach still outnumber the luxury hotels.
Top Beaches in Byron Bay
Main Beach (Byron Bay)
The main beach runs 2 kilometres from the town centre to Clarke's Beach, sheltered by Cape Byron's headland and with gentle waves ideal for families and beginner surfers. The beach is the social heart of Byron Bay — markets, fire twirlers, and buskers on weekend evenings, and one of Australia's best surf schools operating from the beach. Whale watching from the foreshore is excellent from June to November (humpback migration).
The Pass
Immediately below the Cape Byron headland, The Pass is Byron's premier surf break — a right-hand point break that produces long, gentle rides ideal for intermediate surfers and longboarders. The beach at The Pass is smaller and more sheltered than Main Beach, with clear water and good snorkelling around the headland rocks. Dolphins regularly surf the same waves as the human surfers here — a characteristically Byron Bay experience.
Tallows Beach
South of Cape Byron, Tallows is a wild 7-kilometre stretch of exposed Pacific beach accessible on foot from the lighthouse or Broken Head. The beach is undeveloped, often deserted in the southern section, and has powerful waves that make it a good surfing beach for experienced surfers. The Arakwal National Park behind the beach has excellent coastal walking trails. Broken Head, at the southern end, has secluded nudist beach sections within the national park.
Wategos Beach
A small, sheltered bay just below the Cape Byron lighthouse, Wategos is Byron Bay's most exclusive and beautiful beach — a crescent of sand with calm, clear water protected from the prevailing southeast swell by the cape. The small car park above fills early in summer. Wategos has no commercial facilities but the walk from the lighthouse provides some of the best views on the NSW coast. Turtles feed in the kelp beds off the headland.
Best Time to Visit Byron Bay
September to November is the ideal time: warm (22–26°C), with consistent surf, fewer crowds than peak summer, and humpback whale watching at its peak. December through February is summer — hot (26–30°C), busy, and accommodation is expensive. The East Coast Blues and Roots Music Festival in April (Easter weekend) is one of Australia's best music events. Winter (June–August) is mild (15–20°C) and surfing is excellent. Byron is visited year-round.
