Whitsundays: Great Barrier Reef Islands and Whitehaven Beach

The Whitsunday Islands are 74 continental islands scattered across the Coral Sea in Queensland, sitting at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This is one of the world's great island escapes — a place of silica-white beaches, turquoise sailing channels, and vibrant coral reefs accessible from the mainland in under an hour. Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island is consistently ranked among the top ten beaches in the world, its pure silica sand so fine it doesn't retain heat and squeaks underfoot. The islands are most easily explored by sailing charter, seaplane, or day-trip catamaran from Airlie Beach.

Top Beaches in the Whitsundays

Whitehaven Beach

Seven kilometres of 98% pure silica sand on Whitsunday Island's eastern shore, accessible only by boat or seaplane from Airlie Beach. The northern end of the beach at Hill Inlet produces swirling patterns of white sand and turquoise water that are the Whitsundays' signature image. The beach has no permanent facilities — bring everything you need. Camping is permitted at the southern end with a National Parks permit.

Chalkies Beach, Haslewood Island

Less visited than Whitehaven but arguably as beautiful, Chalkies Beach on Haslewood Island has fine white sand, fringing coral reef accessible from the shore, and outstanding snorkelling with turtles, reef fish, and occasional reef sharks. Most sailing charters include a stop here as part of a two-day Whitsundays itinerary. The beach faces east and is best visited in the morning light.

Catseye Beach, Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is the most developed of the Whitsundays — the only island with a commercial airport, resort hotels, and restaurants. Catseye Beach on the island's western shore is a calm, patrolled beach ideal for families, with water sports equipment available for hire and excellent snorkelling at the beach's southern end. Hamilton Island is the best base for first-time visitors who want island comfort with Great Barrier Reef access.

Best Time to Visit Whitsundays

The best time to visit is April to October (dry season), when southeast trade winds provide ideal sailing conditions and skies are clear. June to August is peak sailing season: warm days, low humidity, and consistent 15–20 knot breezes. November to March is summer and wet season — hot and humid with potential tropical cyclones, but also the time when Minke whales are present in the outer reef. Water temperature ranges from 22°C (winter) to 28°C (summer), making it suitable for swimming year-round.
