Corfu Beaches: Ionian Greens and Hidden Coves

Corfu, the northernmost of the Ionian Islands, possesses a coastline of extraordinary variety — emerald coves sheltered by olive groves, dramatic cliffs, and sweeping sandy bays facing across to Albania and mainland Greece. The island's lush vegetation, unusual for Greece, gives many beaches a subtropical character quite unlike the more austere Aegean islands.

Top Beaches in Corfu

Paleokastritsa

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful spots in Greece, Paleokastritsa comprises six small coves separated by forested headlands, crowned by an 18th-century monastery. The water is an extraordinary turquoise, perfect for snorkelling around the rocky outcrops. The beach gets crowded in August, but the setting is genuinely spectacular at any time of day.

Glyfada

The best all-round beach on the island: a long arc of golden sand on the west coast with consistently good waves, a laid-back beach club scene, and excellent tavernas. Glyfada attracts a mix of families and younger travellers, and the sunsets facing west over the Ionian Sea are some of the finest in Greece.

Canal d'Amour (Sidari)

Famous for its dramatically eroded sandstone rock formations and the narrow sea channel between them — local legend holds that swimming through it guarantees eternal love. The main Sidari beach is busy and resort-like, but the Canal d'Amour coves to the west offer a more intimate setting for exploration and swimming.

Agios Gordios

A long, deep bay framed by steep green cliffs, Agios Gordios has a bohemian, unhurried atmosphere that distinguishes it from Corfu's more developed resort beaches. The southern end is calmer and better for families; the north end picks up some Atlantic swell for bodyboarders. Several good tavernas serve fresh fish directly on the sand.

Best Time to Visit Corfu Beaches

June and September offer warm seas (24–26°C), hot days, and significantly fewer visitors than July and August. May is also pleasant for exploring, though the sea is still cool (20°C). The west-coast beaches can have stronger afternoon winds in summer — if you prefer flat-calm water, the sheltered east coast bays are the better choice.

Getting There and Where to Stay

Corfu Town airport receives direct flights from across Europe. Hiring a car is highly recommended to access the west-coast beaches — public bus services are limited. Find hotels in Corfu and compare the best beaches across Greece for your itinerary planning.
