Lombok: Bali's Wilder, Less-Crowded Neighbour
Lombok is the island immediately east of Bali in the Indonesian archipelago — separated by the deep Wallace Line that marks a biogeographical transition between Asian and Australian fauna. Where Bali is exuberant and Hindu, Lombok is quieter, predominantly Muslim Sasak, and dominated by the perfect volcanic cone of Gunung Rinjani (3,726 m), Indonesia's second-highest volcano. Lombok's beaches are arguably superior to Bali's — long, wild, and far less crowded — while the surf breaks of the Lombok Strait at Desert Point and Grupuk are world-class. The Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Meno, and Air) lie off Lombok's northwest coast and are accessible in 20 minutes by fast boat.
Top Beaches on Lombok
Tanjung Aan
The most spectacular beach on Lombok, Tanjung Aan sits at the end of a long southern peninsula flanked by two arching bays of white sand. The eastern bay has fine white sand; the western has an unusual coarser texture — locally described as "pepper grain sand." The water is a vivid turquoise and the surrounding dry hills are dotted with local warungs (cafés). A hill at the headland between the two bays offers one of Indonesia's best beach panoramas.
Kuta Lombok
Not to be confused with Kuta in Bali, Kuta Lombok is a small surf town on the south coast surrounded by dramatic limestone hills and a cluster of excellent beaches within a 10-kilometre radius. Selong Belanak, six kilometres west, is a wide, sheltered bay perfect for beginners learning to surf. Mawun, further west, is a beautiful crescent of calm water in a natural amphitheatre of green hills. The area is developing rapidly but retains an authentic Sasak village atmosphere.
Senggigi Beach
Senggigi is Lombok's main tourist strip on the northwest coast, with views of Bali's Gunung Agung volcano across the strait. The beach itself is dark volcanic sand rather than white, but the sunsets here are extraordinary — Agung turned gold by the setting sun is one of Southeast Asia's most memorable views. Senggigi has Lombok's largest concentration of hotels and restaurants and is the main hub for transport to the Gili Islands.
Best Time to Visit Lombok
May to September is the dry season and the best time to visit — warm (28–33°C), mostly dry, and with reliable surf. July and August are peak months for climbing Rinjani and visiting the Gili Islands. October to April is the wet season with higher rainfall, but the south coast beaches (Kuta area) are shielded from the worst of the rain. January and February have the heaviest rainfall. Water temperature is 27–29°C year-round.
Getting There and Where to Stay
Lombok International Airport (LOP) is served by direct flights from Bali (30 min), Jakarta (2 hrs), and Kuala Lumpur. Fast boats connect Bali's Padang Bai to the Gili Islands (1.5–2 hrs) and also stop at Teluk Nara on Lombok. Browse hotels in Lombok and discover more beaches in Indonesia for your island itinerary.
