Amalfi Coast Beaches: Cliffside Drama and Mediterranean Blue

The Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where dramatic limestone cliffs plunge directly into the Tyrrhenian Sea — one of Italy's most spectacular coastal landscapes. Beaches here are often small and pebbly, tucked between towering rockfaces, and accessed by steep staircases cut into the cliffside. The setting is incomparable; the logistics require patience.

Top Beaches on the Amalfi Coast

Positano (Spiaggia Grande)

The main beach at Positano is undeniably beautiful but expensive and crowded in summer. The real attraction is the setting: the pastel-coloured hillside town cascading down the cliff behind it, ceramic-decorated churches catching the light, the whole scene reflected in water of extraordinary clarity. Arrive by boat from Amalfi or Sorrento for the most dramatic first impression.

Fiordo di Furore

Perhaps the most unusual beach on the Amalfi Coast — a tiny strip of pebble at the bottom of a gorge where a stream meets the sea. Accessible by steep steps from the main coast road, or by boat. The vertical rock walls rise 30 metres on either side; the swimming is excellent in a dramatic natural theatre. This is the venue for the annual cliff-diving championship.

Conca dei Marini and Capo di Conca

Between Amalfi and Positano, these small beaches offer some of the best swimming on the coast — clear water, pebbly shore, and significantly fewer tourists than the famous towns. The lemon grove terraces above Conca dei Marini are among the most photogenic agricultural landscapes in Italy.

Best Time to Visit the Amalfi Coast

May, June, and September are definitively the best months — pleasant temperatures (24–27°C), warm water, and far fewer visitors than July and August when the coast becomes extremely crowded and parking/transport near-impossible. Easter weekend is beautiful but very busy. The coast is accessible (and dramatically beautiful) even in winter, though many restaurants and hotels close November through March.

Getting There and Where to Stay

Naples airport (NAP) or Salerno are the main gateways. The SS163 Amalfitana coastal road is spectacular but very narrow — ferry services between the major towns (Positano, Amalfi, Ravello) are often the better option in high season. Find hotels on the Amalfi Coast and explore the best beaches across Italy.
