Best Beaches in Ari Atoll | Maldives Beach Guide
Ari Atoll: The Maldives' Premier Diving Destination and Whale Shark Hotspot
Ari Atoll (administratively divided into North and South Ari) sits 85 kilometres west of Malé and is considered the Maldives' best atoll for scuba diving — a 30-kilometre wide coral platform containing more than 100 dive sites, famous for whale shark sightings, hammerhead sharks, thresher sharks, and an exceptional density of pelagic life. The South Ari Marine Protected Area around Rangali Deepness and Fish Head is one of the world's premier dive sites. Above the waterline, Ari Atoll has some of the Maldives' most spectacular overwater villas — including the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, where the world's first underwater restaurant was built — and a series of pristine lagoon beaches on uninhabited resort islands.

South Ari Marine Protected Area
The South Ari MPA around Dhigurah, Maamigili, and Vilamendhoo islands is famous for resident whale sharks that can be snorkelled with year-round — one of the most reliable whale shark destinations anywhere. The sharks congregate around the Rangali Deepness channel, attracted by the bait fish, and are reliably sighted by operators from several surrounding resort islands. The protected status has resulted in exceptional reef health throughout the southern section.
Dhigurah Island
Dhigurah is a long, narrow inhabited island (2.7 km long, 200 m wide) in South Ari that serves as the hub for affordable guesthouse whale shark tourism. The island has a bikini beach, several dive schools, and a growing number of guesthouses that offer Ari Atoll access at a fraction of resort prices. The island's own house reef is excellent for snorkelling.
Rangali Deepness (Conrad Maldives)
The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island straddles a natural channel between two resort islands with one of the Indian Ocean's most dramatic settings — the channel between the islands is a cleaning station for manta rays and sharks, easily snorkelled from the beach. The resort's Ithaa underwater restaurant, built 5 metres beneath the lagoon surface, offers dining surrounded by reef fish and coral. The lagoon beaches here are wide, white, and uncrowded.
Best Time to Visit Ari Atoll
Whale sharks are resident year-round in South Ari, making it unique among Maldivian atolls. For diving conditions and beach weather, the northeast monsoon (December–April) brings calm seas and excellent visibility (25–35 metres). July and August are also excellent — the southwest monsoon brings manta rays to the western atoll reefs. Water temperature is 27–30°C throughout the year. Peak resort season is December–January, when prices are highest.
Getting There and Where to Stay
Ari Atoll is reached from Malé by seaplane (25 min) or speedboat (2 hrs). Most resort islands operate their own seaplane or speedboat transfers from Velana International Airport. The domestic airline Maldivian also flies to Maafaru and Maamigili airports in North and South Ari.
