Best Beaches in Baa Atoll | Maldives Beach Guide
Baa Atoll: The Maldives' UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Manta Ray Capital
Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the central Maldives, 100 kilometres north of Malé, and home to Hanifaru Bay — one of the world's most important manta ray and whale shark aggregation sites. Between June and November, oceanic manta rays gather in their hundreds in this small sheltered bay to feed on plankton-rich waters, creating one of the ocean's most breathtaking natural spectacles. Beyond Hanifaru, Baa Atoll has some of the Maldives' most pristine coral reefs, several world-class luxury resorts on uninhabited islands (including the flagship One&Only Reethi Rah), and a quieter, more exclusive atmosphere than the heavily developed North Malé Atoll. This is the right atoll for serious divers and snorkellers who prioritise marine life.
Top Beach and Marine Experiences in Baa Atoll
Hanifaru Bay (Biosphere Reserve)
Access to Hanifaru Bay is managed and limited — only 75 snorkellers and no scuba divers are permitted in the bay at one time, with ranger supervision. Between July and October (peak season) this small bay contains the world's largest known gatherings of reef manta rays — sometimes over 200 individuals feeding in tight spiralling formations. Whale sharks are also regularly seen. Access is via boat from Baa Atoll resorts; booking in advance is essential in peak season.
Dharavandhoo Island Beach
Dharavandhoo is the airport island for Baa Atoll, with a domestic flight from Malé taking 35 minutes. The island has a small local guesthouse scene and a public beach with direct reef access for snorkelling. Baa Atoll's guesthouse tourism is less developed than Malé Atoll, making this the right choice for divers who want to be based near Hanifaru Bay on a limited budget.
Resort Lagoons (Soneva Fushi, Amilla)
Baa Atoll's luxury resorts — Soneva Fushi, Amilla Maldives, and Vakkaru among them — have large, private lagoon beaches with the atoll's characteristically clear water and white coral sand. Soneva Fushi on Kunfunadhoo island is particularly celebrated for its Crusoe-style villas, extensive spa, and the private beach experience that defines Maldives luxury travel at its most refined.
Best Time to Visit Baa Atoll
For manta rays and whale sharks, visit June through November (southwest monsoon). The peak aggregation season at Hanifaru Bay is July–October. For calm seas, dry weather, and optimal snorkelling visibility, visit December through April (northeast monsoon). March and April are the warmest and driest months. The Baa Atoll resorts are open year-round; monsoon months bring lower rates and the extraordinary wildlife offset any weather disruption. Water temperature is 28–30°C year-round.
