Cozumel: Mexico's Caribbean Coral Island and Dive Paradise

Cozumel is a 53-kilometre long island in the Mexican Caribbean, 18 kilometres east of the Yucatán Peninsula, rising above one of the world's most spectacular coral reef systems: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest on Earth after the Great Barrier Reef. Jacques Cousteau broadcast Cozumel's underwater world to the world in 1961, and the island has been a diving and snorkelling destination ever since. The leeward (western) side of the island has a series of marine national park reef systems with visibility routinely exceeding 30 metres, healthy coral formations, and abundant marine life. The windward eastern shore is wild, deserted, and pounded by open Caribbean surf.

Top Beaches in Cozumel

Playa Palancar

On the southern leeward coast, Playa Palancar is a long stretch of white Caribbean sand backed by palm trees, adjacent to the legendary Palancar reef system — Cozumel's most celebrated dive site. The beach has calm, clear, turquoise water ideal for swimming and snorkelling, a beach club with loungers and a restaurant, and direct boat access to the reefs for scuba divers. The sunsets here are among the best on the island.

Playa del Palmar (Town Beach)

The beach in front of San Miguel, Cozumel's only town, is easily accessible and free to use — a wide, sandy stretch with calm water, good snorkelling directly offshore, and the convenience of the town's restaurants, dive shops, and ferry pier immediately behind. Most day-trip passengers from Playa del Carmen (30 min by ferry) spend time at the town beach.

Punta Sur Ecological Park

The protected ecological reserve at the island's southern tip combines a beach, a Mayan lighthouse, a crocodile lagoon, and incredible snorkelling along the Colombia reef — considered one of the world's top 10 dive sites. Entry requires a park fee. The eastern side of Punta Sur has wild, windswept beaches with dramatic waves not suitable for swimming. The lighthouse viewpoint offers spectacular panoramas of the reef below.

Best Time to Visit Cozumel

November to April is the dry season and the best time for diving — calmer seas, excellent visibility (30+ metres), and temperatures of 25–29°C. December through February can be slightly cooler with occasional north winds (nortes) that make some dive sites inaccessible. May to October is the warm, humid season with higher temperatures (30–33°C); hurricane season runs June–November with peak risk in September. Whale sharks and manta rays visit the surrounding waters March–September.
