Tulum Beaches: Mayan Ruins, Cenotes and Caribbean Sand

Tulum has transformed from a backpacker secret to one of the most fashionable beach destinations in the world — and with good reason. The combination of pristine Caribbean beaches, ancient Mayan ruins perched on seaside cliffs, and the unique geological feature of freshwater cenotes directly behind the shoreline gives Tulum a character found nowhere else on Earth.

Top Beaches in Tulum

Playa Paraíso

Directly below the Tulum ruins, Playa Paraíso lives up to its name — white sand, turquoise water, swaying palms, and the dramatic backdrop of the ancient walled city on the cliff above. The beach gets busy around midday when ruins visitors descend, but early morning and late afternoon offer genuine tranquility. One of Mexico's most spectacular settings.

Playa Ruinas

Accessible from within the archaeological site, this small, relatively protected cove offers swimming directly beneath the ruins. The cliffs shelter it from the prevailing winds, making the water calmer than the open beaches to the south. An unforgettable experience — swimming in the Caribbean in the shadow of a 13th-century Mayan temple.

Akumal Beach

Just north of Tulum proper, Akumal's bay is famous for sea turtle encounters — the shallow seagrass beds are feeding grounds for juvenile green turtles year-round. Snorkelling here is among the best free wildlife experiences in Mexico. Arrive early (before 8am) to see turtles before the crowds, and respect the no-touching guidelines to protect the animals.

Best Time to Visit Tulum

November through April offers the most reliable beach weather — dry, warm (27–30°C), and with calm Caribbean seas. The shoulder months of May and June see fewer tourists and lower prices before the summer rush. Hurricane season (September–October) brings risk of storms and rough seas, though Tulum is further south than Cancún and slightly less exposed.

Getting There and Where to Stay

Tulum is 130km south of Cancún — approximately 2 hours by bus or 90 minutes by car via Highway 307. The new Tulum International Airport (TQO) now receives some direct international flights. Compare hotels in Tulum and explore all Mexican Caribbean beach destinations.
