Best Beaches in Koh Lanta | Thailand Beach Guide
Koh Lanta: Thailand's Most Serene Island for Beach Lovers
Koh Lanta is a laid-back island in the Andaman Sea, 70 kilometres south of Krabi, that has managed to preserve what many of Thailand's more developed islands have lost: long, uncrowded beaches, a slow pace of life, and a genuine sense of place rooted in its Sea Gypsy (Moken) and Thai Muslim communities. The island's western coast is lined with over 20 kilometres of beach — from the lively Hat Khlong Dao in the north to the wild, reef-fringed shores of Koh Lanta Marine National Park in the south. Unlike Phuket or Koh Samui, Koh Lanta remains a destination for travellers seeking good food, good diving, and genuinely relaxed beach time.
Top Beaches on Koh Lanta
Hat Khlong Dao
The most accessible and social beach on the island, Khlong Dao stretches three kilometres at the northern end. The sand is soft, the water calm, and the beach has a good selection of beach bars, massage huts, and seafood restaurants. Sunset here is particularly spectacular, with silhouetted fishing boats. It's the best choice for first-time visitors who want convenience without the intensity of Phuket.
Klong Nin Beach
Midway down the west coast, Klong Nin is a long, curving bay backed by jungle hills, with small boulangeries, yoga shalas, and excellent Thai restaurants. The sea here is a deeper turquoise than the northern beaches and there are excellent snorkelling spots around the rocky headlands at each end. During low season (April–November), gentle waves make for good bodysurfing.
Bamboo Bay
In the south of the island within the National Park, Bamboo Bay is accessible only by longtail boat or a rough jungle track. The reward is a perfect horseshoe of white sand with fringing coral reef and no permanent facilities. A solitary beach bar operates in high season. This is the best beach on the island for snorkelling directly from the shore — the coral starts within 20 metres of the waterline.
Best Time to Visit Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is at its best from November to April (dry season). December and January are peak months: warm (28–33°C), dry, and with calm Andaman Sea conditions. March and April are the hottest and driest months — ideal for diving as visibility reaches 30 metres. May through October is monsoon season — most beach facilities close, but budget travellers find accommodation prices drop by 50% and the island turns a vivid green.
Getting There and Where to Stay
From Krabi Airport, take a minibus and ferry combination to Koh Lanta (90 minutes). During high season, direct boats operate from Phi Phi Island and Phuket. Browse hotels on Koh Lanta and discover more beaches in Thailand to plan your Andaman Coast trip.
