Çeşme: Turkey's Aegean Wind Capital and Boutique Beach Destination

Çeşme is a small, sophisticated peninsula town at the western tip of the Izmir province in Turkey, jutting into the Aegean Sea just 80 kilometres from Izmir city. It is Turkey's undisputed windsurfing and kitesurfing capital — the consistent Imbat wind that blows across Alaçatı Bay from June to October creates perfect conditions for water sports, and Alaçatı has become one of the world's most celebrated windsurfing destinations. Beyond the sport, Çeşme offers a charming old town of stone houses and a Genoese castle, a thermal springs tradition dating back to antiquity, some of Turkey's best Aegean seafood, and a boutique hotel scene that attracts Istanbul's design-conscious crowd.

Top Beaches Near Çeşme

Alaçatı Beach

The wind-exposed bay at Alaçatı is a flat, shallow water lagoon that provides ideal conditions for beginners and advanced windsurfers alike. The PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) World Tour visits annually. Even for non-windsurfers, the beach has an energetic, colourful atmosphere with kite canopies overhead, excellent beach clubs, and views of the stone windmills on the hill above the town. Alaçatı itself is one of Turkey's most charming boutique destinations with cobbled streets, restaurants, and converted stone mansions.

İlıca Beach

Çeşme's main town beach, İlıca is a long sandy bay with shallow, warm water naturally heated by thermal springs — unusually warm even by Aegean standards. The town of Çeşme is within walking distance, making İlıca the most convenient beach for hotel guests and day visitors. The beach has good water sports facilities, a Blue Flag certification, and excellent fish restaurants on the waterfront promenade.

Boyalık Bay

A quieter alternative to İlıca, Boyalık is a sheltered sandy cove west of the town centre with calmer water and a more relaxed atmosphere. Popular with families and those wanting to escape the crowds of the main beach. Several good fish restaurants overlook the bay.

Best Time to Visit Çeşme

June to September is peak season — hot (28–35°C), dry, and with the Imbat winds blowing consistently for water sports. July and August are very busy, particularly in Alaçatı which becomes difficult to access without advance reservations. May and October are excellent alternatives: warm enough for swimming, far quieter, and with better availability at boutique hotels. Çeşme's thermal springs make it a year-round destination.
