Best Beaches in Crete | Greece Beach Guide

Crete is the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands — a 260-kilometre-long world unto itself, where rugged White Mountains still hold snow in June while the Libyan Sea below offers some of the Mediterranean's warmest and most transparent water. It is an island of superlatives: the longest gorge in Europe (Samaria, 16km), Europe's only indigenous wild goat (the kri-kri), and a coastline of such variety that it encompasses powder-fine white sand beaches in the east (Balos, Elafonisi, Falasarna), dramatic black pebble beaches in the south (Preveli, Glyka Nera), and secluded coves accessible only on foot or by boat scattered along hundreds of kilometres of undeveloped coastline.

The island divides naturally into four regional units — from west to east: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lasithi — each with a distinct character. The Chania region, dominated by the White Mountains and the Venetian harbour of Chania town, contains the island's most dramatic scenery and several of its finest beaches. The Lasithi region in the east, centred on Elounda and Agios Nikolaos, is the luxury resort heartland with some of Greece's most celebrated five-star hotels. The south coast, largely untouched by mass tourism due to its mountainous hinterland and lack of airport, harbours the island's wildest and most rewarding beach experiences.

The best time to visit Crete is May–June or September–October — the shoulder seasons combine warm water (22–25°C), far fewer crowds than July–August, lower prices, and the added pleasure of hiking through landscapes still green from spring rain or carpeted in autumn wildflowers. The island receives around 300 days of sunshine per year; even October can produce beach days of 25°C and calm seas.
