Best Beaches in Nusa Penida | Indonesia Beach Guide
Nusa Penida is Bali's wildest and most dramatic neighbour — a 202-square-kilometre limestone island 45 minutes by fast boat from Sanur, where sheer 200-metre cliffs drop vertically into the Indian Ocean, hidden beaches lurk at the base of impossible-looking cliff descents, and the underwater world hosts manta rays, Mola mola (ocean sunfish), and sea turtles year-round. The island has exploded in international attention since around 2018 when drone photography of Kelingking Beach's T-Rex-shaped cliff began circulating on Instagram — virtually overnight, images that had been largely unknown outside Indonesia became among the most shared travel photographs on social media, and Nusa Penida became one of the fastest-growing destinations in Southeast Asia.
The island divides into a west coast (more accessible, with the most famous viewpoints and beaches), an east coast (wilder, more local, with exceptional snorkelling), and the smaller connected island of Nusa Ceningan to the southwest. The road network is improving but remains challenging — many "roads" are steep concrete ramps that require a competent scooter rider or a driver comfortable with severe gradients. The beaches on the west coast require descents of 100–700 steps on steep, sometimes uneven staircases built into the cliff face, which limits access for those with limited mobility but preserves the sense of genuine adventure for those who make the effort.
The best time to visit is April to October, the dry season, when the sea is calm enough for the fast boat crossing from Bali and the underwater visibility reaches its peak (25+ metres for manta ray snorkelling at Manta Point). November to March sees stronger swells that can make the boat crossing uncomfortable and occasionally close the island entirely to visitors.
