Tangier: Where Two Continents and Two Seas Meet

Tangier is Morocco's northernmost city, perched on a headland where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea and Europe lies just 14 kilometres across the Strait of Gibraltar. It is one of Africa's most historically layered cities — a former international zone governed by multiple European powers until 1956, its medina a labyrinth of Moorish, Andalusian, and colonial European influences, its literary history shaped by Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, Tennessee Williams, and Jack Kerouac who lived and worked here in the 1950s and 60s. The beach scene is dominated by a long Atlantic sweep of sand west of the medina, and day-trip ferry connections from Spain make Tangier the most accessible of all Moroccan destinations from Europe.

Top Beaches Near Tangier

Tangier City Beach (Plage Municipale)

The main city beach stretches along the Bay of Tangier, a wide crescent of sand in the sheltered Atlantic bay immediately below the medina. The beach is busy and urban in the summer months, backed by the city's corniche promenade. Water quality has improved significantly after marina and sewage infrastructure upgrades. The beach is lifeguarded in summer and provides a vivid cultural experience — Moroccan families, tea sellers, and traditional music creating an atmosphere unlike any European resort beach.

Plage Malabata

East of the city and the port, Malabata is a quieter, more residential beach with views across the Strait of Gibraltar to the Spanish coast — one of the few places in Africa where you can see another continent from the beach. The Malabata lighthouse and a Phoenician settlement site nearby add cultural context to the walk along the headland. Good swimming conditions when winds are light.

Cap Spartel and Hercules Caves

Fifteen kilometres west of Tangier, Cap Spartel marks the point where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet — the northwestern tip of the African continent. Below the lighthouse, wild Atlantic beaches extend south along the so-called "Dunes d'or" coastline. The nearby Caves of Hercules, where mythological tradition says Hercules rested after completing his labours, open directly onto the sea and are one of Morocco's most dramatic natural monuments.

Best Time to Visit Tangier

April, May, September, and October are ideal — warm (20–26°C), low humidity, and with the ferry traffic and tourist crowds at manageable levels. June and July are warm (24–28°C) and busy with Moroccan summer visitors. The Mediterranean climate means mild winters (12–16°C) suitable for cultural exploration. Summer can be cloudy on the Atlantic coast. Note that the crossing from Tarifa in Spain takes only 35 minutes by fast ferry.
