Best Beaches in Siargao | Philippines Beach Guide
Siargao is the Philippines' surf capital and one of Southeast Asia's most celebrated island destinations — a teardrop-shaped island of 437 square kilometres in the Mindanao Sea, southeast of mainland Mindanao, where the world-famous Cloud 9 surf break put the island on the international radar in the 1990s and a sustained decade of organic growth through surf culture and travel blogging transformed it into one of the most talked-about destinations in the Philippines by the 2010s. The island was largely rebuilt after Super Typhoon Odette (Rai) struck in December 2021 with sustained winds of 195km/h — recovery has been remarkable, with most resorts, restaurants, and surf infrastructure fully operational again by late 2022.
Siargao's appeal spans well beyond surfing. The island's interior is a landscape of coconut palms, mangrove lagoons, and traditional fishing villages that has been spared the overdevelopment that compromised Boracay. The General Luna area — the island's tourism hub — has grown from a handful of bamboo guesthouses to a sophisticated cluster of boutique hotels, excellent restaurants, yoga studios, and beach bars, while still managing to feel like a living community rather than a resort zone. Island-hopping tours to the nearby islands of Daku, Guyam, and Naked Island offer a full-day combination of swimming, snorkelling, and fresh barbecued seafood. The Sohoton Cove tour in the south, entering a lagoon accessible only at low tide, is one of the most extraordinary natural experiences in the Philippines.
The best time to visit is March to October, when the seas are calm, island-hopping tours operate reliably, and Cloud 9 produces its most consistent surf. The northeast monsoon (Amihan) season from November to February brings rougher conditions and some tour cancellations, but also the biggest and most powerful surf waves that attract professional surfers to Cloud 9. The island's typhoon season runs July–November — check forecasts carefully when travelling during this period.
