Nazaré: Portugal's Home of the World's Biggest Waves
Nazaré is a legendary surf destination on Portugal's Silver Coast, famous for producing some of the largest waves ever surfed on Earth. The Praia do Norte here is where big-wave surfers regularly ride swells exceeding 20 metres, powered by an underwater canyon that amplifies Atlantic swells to extraordinary heights. Beyond the spectacle of the surf, Nazaré is a charming fishing town with wide sandy beaches, colourful tiled buildings, and a vibrant seafood culture that gives it an authentic Portuguese character unlike any resort town.
Top Beaches in Nazaré
Praia do Norte
Praia do Norte is the beach that made Nazaré famous worldwide. This north-facing bay channels Atlantic swells through the Nazaré Canyon, creating monster waves that top 30 metres in peak season. Garrett McNamara and Sebastian Steudtner both set world records here. Non-surfers come to watch from the clifftop viewpoint at Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo. Swimming is not permitted here — come for the spectacle.
Praia de Nazaré
The main town beach stretches for two kilometres along the seafront promenade, with calm, patrolled waters ideal for families. Local fishermen still pull colourfully painted boats (artesanatos) onto the sand in the early morning. The beach is backed by a lively esplanade of cafés serving caldeirada (fish stew) and grilled sardines. Lifeguards patrol from June through September.
Praia do Salgado
A quieter, less developed beach three kilometres south of the town centre, Praia do Salgado attracts visitors who prefer uncrowded sand and a more natural Atlantic setting. Backed by dunes and pinewood, it offers good bodyboarding conditions and a laid-back atmosphere that contrasts with the busy main beach.
Best Time to Visit Nazaré
Summer (June to September) is peak season for beach holidays, with warm temperatures between 22–28°C and calm, swimmable seas. For big-wave surfing, come between October and February when Atlantic storms generate the giant swells. Spring and autumn offer mild weather, smaller crowds, and the best photography conditions. The famous Outubro Rosa big-wave season typically peaks in November and December.
