Best Beaches in Algarve | Portugal Beach Guide

The Algarve is Portugal's most famous coastal region and one of the finest beach destinations in Europe — a 155-kilometre stretch of Atlantic coastline at the southernmost tip of continental Europe, where three millennia of wind, wave, and geological uplift have sculpted the limestone into a landscape of outrageous beauty: golden ochre cliffs, hidden sea caves, natural stone arches, and coves of powder-fine sand accessible through narrow cliff gaps that open like secret doors. The Algarve's beaches divide into three distinct characters: the dramatic cliff coves of the western Sotavento coast (Praia da Marinha, Praia de Benagil, Praia da Rocha), the long, open Atlantic beaches of the Barlavento coast (Praia do Amado, Arrifana — home to Portugal's finest surf), and the calm, lagoon-sheltered sands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park in the east (Meia Praia, Ilha Deserta).

The region is well-served by Faro International Airport, with direct connections to most European cities year-round. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses in Tavira's whitewashed old town to ultra-luxury golf resorts at Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo in the Golden Triangle. The regional capital of Lagos combines a historic old town with perhaps the finest concentration of sea cliff beaches in Portugal within walking distance of the town centre: Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo, and Praia Dona Ana are all within 2km of the medieval walls.

The best time to visit the Algarve is May–June and September–October — the water is warm enough for swimming (19–23°C), the beaches are not yet at summer capacity, and the Algarve's famous 300 days of annual sunshine is reliably delivering its quota. July–August sees the region at peak tourist volume with accommodation prices at their highest; the western surf beaches around Sagres and Arrifana are notably less crowded than the central cliff coves and offer a completely different and equally rewarding experience.
