Holbox Island

By Romeu MaiaOn Friday I left Mérida early for 2 nights on the island of Holbox, the trip was long and I still had to cross by ferry from Chiquilá to Holbox island. On arrival, everything was going well and the preparations for the carnival celebrations were ready.
I was in my room putting my things away before heading out when yet another of those downpours like the ones on my first days in Cancún started, must be because I'm close to there again. Fortunately it was only an hour, after which, although the streets were flooded in some places and muddy in others, I was able to go out and watch the party.
Here there's no tarmac on the road and everyone gets around in golf carts, ordinary ones or others that look more like all-terrain jeeps. Dirt roads have their pros, but also their downsides, I went to the party in flip-flops, which kept getting stuck in the mud (I'd have been better off going barefoot), and at the end of the party, when I got home, my clothes were all splattered with mud.
Some dance groups went round the different streets, each with its own music, and there was a main stage where a music group entertained the night. Then the King and Queen of the Holbox Carnival were presented and the night carried on with music and fun in the various streets of the town.
