Holbox Island and the carnival party
18 Feb 2023
By Romeu MaiaOn Saturday I went early in the morning to walk along the beach towards Punta Mosquito. The route went more along the sandbanks that form in the water than along the shore. But halfway, at Playa Mosquito, I found out the area is a protected nature reserve and it isn't possible to go any further. On the way there I saw several birds and even a small stingray and, once there, I was lucky enough to see a pink flamingo wandering around at the edge of the reserve.
I spent the morning there enjoying the beach and watching some birds and I even found a heart with my name on the beach. The pelican was the one who stood out most, a show-off, alternating between low flights skimming the water and flying about 10 metres up to then plunge in a dive into the water to try to catch a fish.
In the afternoon, after going back to central Holbox for lunch and to watch the rehearsals that were already out on the street, I went to the other side of the island. Punta Coco was the destination where I carried on my day of relaxing on the beach until sunset. I had gone prepared with something to eat and drink, because prices there were high: a girl from the hostel had told me she'd paid 100 pesos/€5 for a mango and I then confirmed it when I saw someone pay 200 pesos/€10 for a pineapple. They made the mistake of ordering before asking the price, which you shouldn't do here.
I ended up staying in the area until 9 pm to see the bioluminescence that happens there once it's dark. The light that appears in the water is created by some living organisms found in the water and, when you stir the water, you see blue lights appearing in it. It's not the ideal time of year, but it was enough to get an idea of what it was.
Then I went back to the hostel in the dead of night along an unlit path, helped by a few golf carts passing by and some people with torches who were better prepared than me for going to the place where the bioluminescence happens, lighting my way back.
In the evening I went for dinner and to watch the carnival party going on in the street, with some golf carts pulling open trailers carrying the band with the musicians and some 20 dancers dressed to the nines for the occasion. They moved around, stopping in different places, where people immediately gathered to watch the music and dance shows.
